Bukit Antarabangsa... Multiple tragedy
December 10, 2008 by drrafick

Today is D5 of the Bukit Antarabangsa tragedy. During the highland tower incident, I was part of the medical team assisting in the rescue and support effort but today I am a
victim of a similar tragedy. Something that I never thought that would have an impact on me. Relatively in comparison, what happened to those families who lost their love ones is nothing compared to what me and probably 2000 other residents had to endure past 4 days. Many tragedies took place this time around. I am not going to be diplomatic about it. I will say it the way I see it.

Within 2 hours after being made aware of landslide, I and several residents of Taman Bukit Utama activated an Ops Centre (known as TBU Ops Centre). We looked at important issues that we needed to tackle, mainly water supply, waste disposal, security, food distribution and medical evacuation. What was supposed to be our Taman Ops centre became the Ops Centre to eight "Taman" surrounding ours who were cut off from the outside world. We had no electricity, water, fixed telephone line internet. Most people had limited food in their house
as they had already planned to travel for Raya hence did not stock up any food.

Within an hour after meeting, we set up and completed a temporary water supply by laying pipes to get mountain water for the residents. Ops centre was up in the next hour and we started communication channel with the outside world via SMS and arranging food and drinking water supply. We took preventive measures to manage disease outbreak by managing waste. All this was done by a handful of people from Taman Bukit Utama Resident Association
(PPTBU). We setup the helipad for the rescue team to come in. With the help of a friend DSP Kumar, we managed to evacuate by air (Medivac) a total of 39 patients which consist of stroke patients, elderly people, kidney failure patients etc. The patients were evacuated by police air wing which was arranged by DSP Kumar from the UTK through his personal contacts. We did all this independently without the support of any help from the Base station at Ground zero.

Within the first 48 hours, while in darkness several homes were reported to have been broken into by unknown people in residential areas adjacent to TBU where there was no or minimal residential coordination among the residents. Food was scarce and cooked food from PBSM (Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah) did not arrive in timely manner. The longest time was dinner that only reached us in the morning which was not edible by then.

While we are stuck, we had VVIP visitors that come to our area. I would say out of many people that came only a handful was actually helpful. YB Elizabeth Wong, a state Exco came with a working group had arranged for generators, fuel, candles, garbage bags and others. She came
by foot with very few people and carried relevant information without empty promises. The IGP came and gave me his personal commitment and blessing that, I continue to handle all air evacuation with the support of Police Udara.

I was told that the Minister of Information visited only the UMNO relief center at a Condo nearby. He did not come to our place. The NGO that is worth mentioning is Mercy who gave me
some drugs, INSAF who open a small medical clinic for 2 days and MAVFCL (Kapt Bala and his crew) which opened a temporary access between Athenaeum condo (the condo at the highest point on the hill) and a generator set to charge hand phones, and Bukit Utama which allowed people to leave by foot.

It is regretful to note that NO government agency deserves any mention in the first 36 hours of tragedy except for Polis Udara and Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat. I think they forgot about us...

While 2000 people were surviving in the darkness with the absence of proper food, Concord Hotel, Ali Maju restaurant, Burger King and many others donated tons of food. Unfortunately, no one attempted to send the food to us. Residents that were not affected by the tragedy
and the rescue workers were enjoying them. The kind of food they got down there was lavish. There was fresh roti chanai, tosai mee goreng etc. The best word to describe the situation down there is "food fiesta". Someone commented that there is so much "Teh Tarik" that you can wash your shoes with it.

The landslide is a major tragedy. The bigger tragedy is that the failure of the government to act fast enough.

While multiple agencies went into action fast, most of them work independently. On the 3rd day, we had 10 soldiers from RAMD with two officers with the rank of Major that came to our centre. I asked them a basic question on their role and the officers could not give me a straight
answer. He was very blur. To me his presence was a liability to the ops center as we had to feed an additional 10 mouth with our limited stocks.

This is not the first time a tragedy took place. The disaster relief operation was not well- coordinated. The command and control was lacking. Information dissemination to the media was scattered and caused panic among the people. Many friends and relatives outside called us and we could not entertain them, as our battery power was limited. In terms of political publicity, I would say UMNO was a clear winner. This is because they control the media.

Unfortunately, I would say that in the hearts of the people UMNO loss big time. The high-level
conduct of their people on the ground and the selective help that was given out was too much to bear. In fact, the Putri Umno head that I've known over the past few months was behaving in such a highhanded manner that that really showed her true colours. They were hoarding food and distributing them to "their people".

Their action has only reinforced my idea that the Federal and the State Government must be from different parties. This is needed for check and balance. Malaysians must realize that for the sake of our own lives and our own children lives, we have to have balance of power. It is because of the lack of balance of power; the water catchment area that is a state land that was given to MBF which is now known as "Bukit Antarabangsa". In my assessment, the government is liable. In this case, the government which was led by BN in the state of Selangor and at National level in the past 50 odd years, is liable for the suffering of the people of Bukit Antarabangsa. They are liable because they alienated unsuitable land for development. They are liable for giving the people the false sense of security by approving development plans and projects. They are liable for hiding information from the people that shows that the area that we are buying is not safe for living. I will only vote for the balance of power in the future and UMNO will not be part of that balance.

NIAHMAH!!!

Of Course he wrote it better.

GAZA

(English translation at end of write-up)

*****

1. The world seem to be condemning Israel for the inhuman attack against Gaza. But as usual the world does nothing. Why not? Because Israel is backed by the United States of America.

2. The world should also condemn the United States. The planes and the bombs are all made in America. If they are lost the US will replace them. And the US will finance Israel so as to continue its bestiality.

3. For as long as the US backs Israel, we will continue to see Israel ignoring world opinion as it murders the Palestinians Arabs, and destroys their towns and cities.

4. When I said Israel rules the world by proxy, the American media and Government condemned me. But it is a fact that only those candidates approved by Israel can win elections in America. So much for democracy in the United States. Lets see the stand of the United States' new President.

5. Incidentally we should also realise that we are, in a small way, helping Israel. Israeli persimmons (pisang kaki) are sold in supermarkets in Kuala Lumpur.

6. Singapore is Israel's channel to penetrate the Malaysian market.

TERRORISM

Posted by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at December 26, 2008 4:47 PM | Permalink | Comments (173) | TrackBacks (0) | Previous Blog
1. Every day we hear, we read and we watch on television reports about acts of terrorism somewhere. No place seems to be free from terrorism.

2. From Indonesia to New York, suicide bombers, airplanes, cars and vans loaded with explosives are being blown up, killing people and destroying buildings almost with impunity.

3. Security measures have been taken, using sophisticated and costly methods, specially trained anti-terror squads, electronic detectors and tedious body searches, including scrutiny of shoes, hand bags and luggage. But the terror attacks have gone unabated. We seem to have to live with this danger striking where we least expect with no end in sight.

4. Great thinkers, journalists, political analysts and politicians of all shades and colour have written at length and given their reasons and their analysis of these acts of terror, why people should be willing to blow themselves up frequently killing innocent people.

5. The analysts and writers have attributed such acts as being due to the teachings of the Prophet of Islam, as the tendencies of Muslims to be violent, as the expressions of the clash of civilisation, as the jealousies against people who are better off themselves. They blame the extremism of the Wahabi sect of Islam and the hatred of leaders of the sect such as Osama bin Laden.

6. Based on their analysis they prescribed measures to curb terrorist activities, arresting suspected, subjecting them to torture and humiliation.

7. But still the acts of terror have gone on and show signs of escalating. Muslim airline passengers are made to go through humiliating searches, detained for hours. Hundreds of so-called terrorist suspects have been detained without trial for years, often humiliated and tortured with no means of seeking redress.

8. But through all these the real reason for these violent acts of terror has been deliberately ignored. It is as if the Europeans and the Americans are in a state of denial. It is as if all the European and American leaders fear to state the truth. Their media too appear to conspire to avoid mentioning the true cause of the anger and frustration of the people who commit these acts of terror.

9. Yet if we pause to think we cannot help but notice that these acts began with the forceful seizure of the land of the Palestinian Arabs in order to create the formerly non-existent state of Israel; the expulsion of the Arab Palestinians from their homes and their country, the killings of the Arabs by Zionist terrorists, and the incarceration of the Arab Palestinians in makeshift refugee camps for the last 60 years or so.

10. This is the basic and original cause of the acts of terror. Initially the neighbouring Arab countries tried to regain Palestinian land through conventional war. But Israel with the help of America and Britain defeated the forces of Syria, Jordan and Egypt.

11. Not only were they defeated but Israel grabbed more Arab land. At each attempt to regain Palestinian land, Israel together with America and Britain seized more Arab land.

12. In the area of Palestine which the Israelis have not seized, Jewish settlements were set up. Roads were built on Arab land which the Arab Palestinians are not allowed to use. High walls are built to break up Arab villages, preventing the villagers from contacting their close relatives even.

13. In the meanwhile the world watched the expulsion of Arab Palestinian and their plight with little concern and less sympathy.

14. Against the powerful Israeli forces the Palestinians could do nothing. They have no guns or tanks or fighter planes. Angry and frustrated they tried guerrilla war. But this was to no avail.

15. Eventually they resorted to what is referred to as terror attacks. Not having delivery vehicles they made use of suicide bombers, blowing themselves up.

16. Instead of resolving the Palestinian issue the Americans and the British decided to attack other Muslim countries. Afghanistan and Iraq were invaded, and Syria and Iran are threatened. Naturally this did not help solve the Palestinian issue. It simply aggravated the problem. And now other Muslim people, knowing that there can be no solution by their Government have adopted the same terror tactics as the Palestinians.

17. I was in Syria recently to attend a conference on the "Right of Return" of the Palestinian people I was also in Iran and Yemen. Everywhere I went I found among the ordinary people anger and hatred directed at the Jews, the Americans and the British. Their Governments are terrified by the British and the Americans. But their people are more and more bitter. There will be many who would be willing to blow themselves up even if they will not succeed in liberating their countries.

18. Terror attacks will not diminish for as long as the Palestinians are forced to remain as refugees, are denied the right of return.

19. America will have a new President soon. If the membership of his Cabinet and his staff are anything to go by, there is little that Obama can do, even if he wants to solve the Palestinian problem. All American Presidents and legislators are hostages of Israel. Fail to side with Israel and they will be defeated at the next elections.

20. "Terrorism" is going to be a part of the world scene for a very, very long time.

Bedtime Stories.

I was packing up to attend my friend's wedding when my mom received a call from my hometown. My grandma is in the hospital! We rushed back to Batu Pahat, and after serious discussion, my grandma was brought to Raffles Hospital, Singapore for further treatment. Alhamdulillah, she is stable now, and recuperating at home. My Xmas were celebrated in Singapore with my dad's relatives and my mom's at the hospital. It was the first time I did not shop when I reached Singapore. Imagine the torture, missing my friend's wedding, and my hotel is right at Orchard Road. Imagine, imagine.

Anyway, because I missed a LOT of fun, I decided to compensate by going to the cinema with cousins to watch Bedtime Stories. It was really goood, and extremely funny. I think I suck at doing reviews, most of mine were just encouragements to watch and such. Actually, I do not want to spoil anybody's fun by dropping snippets. Im sure we all can relate to the part when another movie patron told snippets in the cinema loud enough while we are watching. Irritating right ?

After the movie, we decided to have dinner. I recommended the Sany Char Kuey Teow. It was nice, but the wok heiis lacking. I guess I came at a bad time because other family members had great things to say about the dish last time. Anyway, before the movie, we decided to try the A&W Waffle in a Cup at Sunway Pyramid. The item took foreverrr to arrive , and I was rudely ignored when I went to the counter to ask about my order. The exact statement is ."Can you sit down, we will send it now". The Horror !! I asked for the manager but of course he is unavailable. Next time anyone dine there, do extend my complain ok ?

Furnace.

I was extremely sleepy today and decided to sleep awhile at the unofficial Surau in the office. When I woke up it was 4.30 pm, and I hurriedly pack to leave. However, when I reached the clerk's cubicles, one of the DPPs, Tuan Adzmeer said in a loud voice, "Baru bangun tido dah nak balik, potong gaji". IN FRONT OF EVERYONE!!!!ARGHHHHH!!! You could knock me down with a feather !!I am so not talking to him for ten years.Everyone heard and laughed !!

Merry Xmas everyone !!and a Happy New Year..Ill prolly stay at home and bake, not celebrating in regard of the landslide and the Mumbai tragedy.

Going Diva

DIVA = FINE LADY, PRIMADONNA, FEMALE SINGER

My close friends will definitely tell you that there will be a time when I will strut around being a diva. Being a diva can actually be potrayed as both good and bad. Good for us as we feel good about ourselves and be admired but bad for the receiving end of our nastiness ! (sometimes)

Anyway, my most favourite Diva-ish moment was when I was attending a party organized by the Carat Club. I was pampered right from the start, with demands of a makeover by Bobbi Brown, massages early morning, and even get the chance to wear my LBD ! I was extremely excited and even boss my lil bro to drive me right at the doorstep as I dont drive and do not want to sweat by taking public transport.

At the event, I managed to hobnob with extremely cool people, and eat extremely good hors deouvres( or whichever way u spell it !). I smiled and took pics ( boss people to take mine ) and be merry with everyone and smile the diva-ish smile of I-Have-It-All and act the diva-ish way of being indulgent . One might think being a diva is all about being bossy and rude, however it is more of feeling good and doing what one love best and be respected for it.

Affidavit

Believe it or not, I have not been shopping for approx. 7 months! Huurah !! Reasons as to why :

1. Getting fatter
2. Saving up to buy something ( goal keeps changing), but somehow i think its a lil too much
3. Busy with workloads

Surprisingly, I find myself becoming more serious when it comes to work. I am now in civil and advisory, and normal days will see me doing affidavits and whatnots. Life in the office is somehow more acceptable, and i find myself thinking about the day when I will leave, and it felt sad. Haihh..I learned a lot about the legal system here, and I no longer fret the working life, but looking forward to the day when I shall receive the paper that will entitle me to buy anything I desire !!

Noticed any typo error ? I have been jittery lately. No cant do. Parental units make it harder by discussing renovations about our new residential unit. Im torn in between, I wanted to work far away from them, but I feel reluctant to leave such nice comforts I enjoyed here. No one gets his cake and eat them too, I guess. Oh, gtg the boss is here. Toodles !!!

Btw, welcome to blogspot Mas ! I forgot ur url. Mari merepek !

17.12.08

Pout.

Due to the recent landslide, Dad suffered some losses which might be recoverable, however we are not taking any chances. As much as I hate it to happen, my parental units have put all real estate properties in the market, maintaining one small house, enough for all of us to fit in. The reason : To cover financial losses as well as the fact that my dad is retiring in 6 or 7 years and he does not want to be burdened with maintenance of the property. Life is hard, is is not? I am so counting to be able to own the house in Subang, because houses are sooo expensive now. I guess I need to start saving !

9.12.08

Freakin weekend.

The Carat Club Anniversary saw a posh luncheon being held at C.Club in conjunction with the Anniversary and the launching of the LG phone. Posh, elegant and exorbitant.Prices,i mean. But the value is quite good, cheap even for a piece of diamond. The girls are nice too and i get to view pieces from Nurita Harith and sevendays I had tremendous fun at the party, in a tie laced way. Anyway, on my way home, i got this message :

Iza has given birth to a healthy baby girl at .....

Congratss Kakak !!!

Eidul Adha just passed , and I think it is not too late wish everyone happy Eidul Adha. While celebrating, please bear in mind the sufferings of the Mumbai tragedy and the recent landslide victims of Bukit Antarabangsa. My family is slightly affected, due to my father's land investment being affected by the slide. When I think of how close we were to become victims, I thank Allah for giving us the chance to still live life and repent for our sins. Money can be collected, but lives cannot.Spare prayers for the victim. Al-fatihah.
